Alex Smith
What is geopsychiatry?
Mr Alexander Smith (MA) is a researcher at the Department of Forensic Psychiatry in the University of Bern and a member of the Geopsychiatry Special Interest Group of the World Psychiatric Association. Having worked previously nearly a decade in academic journals publishing, he joined the University of Bern in 2022. His research interests centre around geopolitical determinants of health, human rights, social justice, and how medicine intersects with the humanities, some of which have been featured in journals like The Lancet, The Lancet Psychiatry, European Psychiatry, and Nature Mental Health, among others. Alongside his research position, he is currently completing a PhD at the University of Bern, focusing on the mental health of politicians and geopolitical stressors.

Professor Dinesh Bhugra, CBE, MA, MSc, MBBS, DSc (Hon), PhD, FRCP, FRCPE, FRCPsych, FFPHM, FRCPsych (Hon), FHKCPsych (Hon), FACPsych (Hon), FAMS (Singapore), FKCL, MPhil, LMSSA, FAcadME, FRSA, DIFAPA, served as President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists from 2008 to 2011, President of the World Psychiatric Association from 2014 to 2017, and President of the British Medical Association from 2018 to 2019. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at King’s College London.
